The U.S. Forest Service, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC), and the Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards (SAWS) are hosting a crosscut A/B course on October 18-20, 2023. We are asking folks that are recertifying to join us for the entire training because of the new 2023 saw policy and curriculum we are using.
Why? To build capacity for wilderness stewardship for agency staff, partners, and volunteers.

All participants must be able to provide proof of current First Aid and CPR certifications.
Course layout and expectations:
Crosscut A/B course: Students are expected to attend classroom and field portions of the A/B course starting at 8 am on Wednesday, October 18th.
Expect courses to begin at 8 am and end by 5 pm daily.
About the volunteer trail camp: Home to the Konnarock Volunteer AT crew, the facility has about 15 semi-developed, roofed sleeping areas with 2-3 beds. There is a full-service professional kitchen. Gendered bathrooms with showers, clothes washers/dryers. There is a community room for classes and dining, and outdoor picnic tables. There is limited wi-fi available and no cell phone service.
The Mount Rogers NRA Sugar Grove Work Center is adjacent to the camp. Training field sites will be within walking distance from the camp. The address for the Work Center is 655 Flat Ridge Rd, Sugar Grove, VA 24375, the entrance to the volunteer camp is west of the address.
Other Accommodations: Marion, VA has several lodging and dining options. It is approximately a 25 minute drive to the volunteer trail camp.
